Master Yourself | Start Small, Start Today!

Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power. - Lao Tzu

I used to be in love with a statement people used for me, ' he can get the work done!' I felt powerful, masterful and some times cocky. Now only if I could wake up when I wanted to!

post continues below>

Success Coach, My Eclat Coach, Prabhjot Bedi, Mastering Oneself, Master Yourself

People start early in the west. Some of them will be at their desk by 0800 am and the first meeting could be scheduled at that time if you are ok with it. I found myself making it to these meetings much ahead of time. If you consider the travel time of upwards of an hour or two, that is waking up really early.

I could do the same when I was working in hotels. Morning shifts typically start at 0700 am and I would make it on time (sometimes running to the back office). I could reach class if I had to, but could never make it to breakfast in college.

where am I heading? I can wake up early for anyone else in the world, but I cant wake up for myself. That is sad!

The power is not mine, its theirs.
The power is in the hands of everyone who can make me give up my cozy bed!
This is where I lost it. Am I truly the master or am I the one who is mastered?

I am making mastering myself a top priority, starting today.
It is going to be a singular focus.

I intend to do things just for myself, I intend to achieve purely for my mind and satisfaction and I intend to challenge myself to win against myself.

I intend to beat myself into submission, to myself.

what about you?

Are you able to keep all the small promises to yourself?

let me give you examples and ask yourself if this is you:
1. You have asked your team to ensure that they always leave on time. You tell them there is more to life than just work. They leave on time, thank you. You stay in your office for another 3 hours.

2. You see a movie where the father makes it to the child's practice session, game, match etc. you think wow, how nice, cute blah blah. Its been 3 years since you even saw your child play let alone attend a school match.

3. You meet an old school/college freind and realize that they have been able to keep themselves in shape. You tell yourself you will do something about it, but.....

hmmm, you get the picture.

what can you do? two things

1. start today

2. start small.

This is from the GTD philosophy. Start by keeping small promises to yourself. Sooner you will see that you feel a lot more trusting on that person called you. In just a few months you will be telling yourself that if you want you can do anything.

I mean it. Want true power? Master Yourself!

Cheers!

The famous Dabbawala or Tiffin Wallahs of Mumbai...

Succes Coach, Prabhjot Bedi, Eclat Coach, Career Success
by babasteve

Tiffin Wallah translates as one who carries the box.

Tiffin is an old English word for a light lunch, and also the name of the multi-compartment metal lunch box that carries it.

The Tiffin Wallah originated over a century ago when the many Indians working for British companies disliked the food served at work.

Tiffin service was created to bring home cooking to the workplace. Today the city's 5,000 tiffin-wallahs deliver 200,000 tiffin-boxes filled with home-cooked food each day.

According to a recent survey, there is only one mistake in every 16,000,000 deliveries and the system has registered a performance rating of 99.999999.

Prince Charles is a fan and patron of the Tiffin Wallahs and countless businesses and corporations study the system to learn of its success and efficiency.

Whats the learn?
what makes this model so successful?
Systems?
Processes?
People?
Material?
I have been a mumbaikar and having seen this in action can vouch for the system. It works.
My take is simply this. Create a process, chisel at it till it starts to function well and then its simply about deploying. ensure standards are understood, imparted, and then followed.

RESUME SKILLS| Sending your resume my mail? address it to someone in particular

I receive 100+ resumes a day and that is a lot for me. So imagine the number of resumes a recruiter will recieve when they advertize for a position. LOADS!

I wrote about how you can ensure your resume stands out RESUME SKILLS| Do You Have A Good Looking Resume? and also How much time does a recruiter spend on your resume? but today I want to talk about a strategy that I think would work to ensure your resume is not only received it is also read.

what is the secret, the strategy?

Find someone to send the resume to.
Make it personal.
Find a link and exploit it.
Put a name to the nameless email address e.g. careers@xzyhotels.com

How?

1. Personal Contacts | find someone in the company who can forward your resume or tell you who works in HR. better still find someone in HR

2. Internet | online groups & social media sites will tell you all you need to know. You dont need to know the HR individual personally, you just need to know who to send the profile to.

3. Call the company/Hotel | ask for the name of the HR executive/manager. You could ask the telephone operator or ask the HR themselves. Ask.

4. Visit the hotel /Company | I know this is old fashioned and cumbersome. One of the reasons why not many people do it anymore. You could just simply drop your resume at the reception or walk up to HR and hand it to them. Smile when you are there!

Now that you have the name, make sure you structure the subject line well.
K/Attn: Mr/Ms XYZ | Profile for "job applied for"

Ensure the cover letter is personalized as well.

Dear Mr/Ms XYZ,

Further to your ..... I take this opportunity to apply/forward my candidature for the position of ......

p.s. I wrote about how to structure your cover letter. go to RESUME SKILLS| Create an Awesome e-cover letter

Cheers!

Learning From Mistakes

one of my fav philosophy is to try everything once.
Make mistakes, but learn.
Making a mistake demonstrates your courage, repeating a mistake your stupidity.

what this allows me to do is try. I can, without fear of any internal anguish and remorse make mistakes and in the process pick up a few valuable lessons and conversation starters.

What to do if you want to do the same?

Oh, the first part is simple. By nature we are made to learn by trial & error and each of those trials takes us towards our learning.
So if you want to make mistakes do the following:

1. Seek
2. Do
3. Laugh when you fail.

there, wasnt the first part of making mistakes simple?

Its the second part of not repeating your mistakes that is difficult and tumutlous.

Some of the steps I follow are mentioned below, but to be honest I still flounder. I realize after having goofed that I have in recent memory lapsed on the same account before. I welcome suggestions...here are my tips:

1. Keep a mistake/learning memory pad - hand, electronic, etched on wood doesnt matter.
Record the following:
- The situation
- The key players
- The success part
- The learning / mistake
- Why it happened
- what YOU can do to avoid it in the future.

2. Regular assesment/review - I cannot stress this part enough. Our memory plays tricks on us. You may not remember the ordeal as it occured when it happened.

3. feedback - very important part of the process. give yourself feedback. list the positives from the ordeal and remember to tell yourself you are smarter because of it.

4. read the early signs - when a new situation develops learn to read the signs early. these indicators will warn you about the incoming storm and if you have weathered one before you would be ready when it arrives!

history repeats itself.

the second time around make amends, be smarter, be in the know and in the right.

Cheers!
