Valuable tips to make Job networking work for you!

This is by Janice Worthington, MA, CPRW, JCTC, CEIP

I found it extremely practical and wonderful, so I am using it here.
I am going to list the original point and then add my comments to it.
Happy Networking!

1. If unemployed, print your own business cards to use at networking events. Include your contact information with your target market. Example: John Q. Smith, Sales Management.

Me: In principle a BIG YES! when you meet someone, anywhere, not just at a networking event, and you are not working somewhere, its very difficult for them to remember you. A personal card will keep you in the hunt!
My only request, get this made from a professional and keep it professional in design. No emails ids which read like lovelyatheart@xxx.com or sweet78foryou@xxx.com
Also, the number you print on the card, please remove all those JHATAK caller tunes.

2. When you collect business cards, follow-up! Note on the back of each card where you met the person and something noteworthy to help you remember him. Schedule a time to meet for coffee to continue building the relationship.

Me: Absolutely. Coffee in the indian context may not really work, but please do send a follow up email to the person.

3. Consider networking as a process you do for the life of your career, not just something to do between jobs. Continue to grow your career by building and maintaining relationships.

Me: When I was a young Duty Manager in a hotel, my boss told me to spend equal time on junior & senior executives from companies that used our hotel. He explained further..when you are a General Manager, these juniors ones will also be heading their organizations. IMP!!

4. When networking, offer first - take second. Determine what value you can provide others before asking for their help. This way you will leave a very favorable impression.

Me: More so important in the Indian context. We dont like people talking about what they want straight away. there has to be some, as they say, common ground first. Find what you can offer. Bring the honey, the bees will come!

5. Remember that everyone you meet has the potential to lead you to your target. Most people are only six degrees removed from the person with whom they need to connect.

Me: True in the context of six degrees of seperation, but if you have just started networking, network with people where you can see a direct link to what you want The traffic policeman on the corner may just know the Vice President of Oberoi Hotels, but try networking with someone from the Oberois to begin with!

6. Networking gurus have polished 30-second commercials. Practice your "signature statement" so it sounds natural and conveys the right message in a concise way.

Me: Write it down, practice it in front of a mirror, make an MMS, see it, share it with friends, improve, do it again.
when you ready, start using it!

7. Be authentic. No one likes a know-it-all any more than a wallflower. Be yourself and be real. Above all else, remember your manners. Thank those who help you.

Me: THE THE Advice. You can see through people who you know only come to you when they need help, why do you think others wont be able to see that in you?
Be true, be real!
