RESUME SKILLS| The DO NOTs

I have been writing on resume skills for a lit bit now and while I think we have dwelt on quite a few important things, we haven’t spoken or discussed the DONTs!

So here are some of my DONTs for your resume:



>Do not write the word ‘Resume’ on top, or anything else that means just about the same thing. Bio-Data, CV etc.

>Do not use words you do not understand.
I am shocked at some candidates, when I ask them what they mean by words like ‘transformational’ or ‘paradigm changing’ etc and they have a blank look. Suddenly the resume becomes “blank” too.

>Do not create an epic from your resume.
A page is ideal. Two if you have loads of exp. No other excuse for verbosity.

>Do not MASS MAIL
I am making this bold to highlight this menace.
I understand emailing makes it easy to send your resume to multiple people all at once, but really the only thing you are doing is demonstrating how lazy you are.
Personalize your emails. Specify your interest, job details etc.
DO NOT, DO NOT mass mail.

>Do not Lie, or even Fib
Tempting as it is, it will be caught.
I once interviewed an candidate who told me he was working in Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur. I asked the year and he mentioned (unfortunately for him) the year that I was there too.
He was obliviously lying.
DO NOT LIE.

  4. It is indeed a good data for donot's in resume.
    I hardly cannot make it out---why people had to lie, when they are out of job. It might be so many reasons but the fact is he is out of job. So,if out of job say boldly that I was not involved without of any organisation and looking for a opening.
    What do you suggest will any employers like it or appreciate the same? To my opinion it may be the real employer will appreciate the truth and may consider the candidature.

    thank you for your comments.
    I think employers have ways and means to check your past employment records.

    personally, I know a lot of employers who are more interested in the candidate and what that candidate can do for them than anything else.

  6. The things I would add to a 'Do not' list for resume building are:
    1. DO NOT forget that MS Word has a built-in spelling and grammar check
    2. DO NOT assume that what you are saying in your resume is what the recruiter wants to hear - seek feedback on a freshly written resume from trusted peers in the industry, or a mentor (if you have one)
